Harry Potter spin-off trilogy is happening – Expelliarmus!

Warner Bros confirm 3 new films based in JK Rowling’s magical world

Not content with unveiling a massive slate of new DC superhero movies up until 2020, Warner Bros have also announced a trilogy of spin-off films based on Harry Potter writer JK Rowling’s spin-off book, Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them.

Although a film based on the book was all but confirmed, its nature as a trilogy hasn’t been confirmed until now, with Order Of The Phoenix through to Deathly Hallows Part 2 director David Yates planned to direct the first film, and Rowling herself taking on screenwriting duties for the first time.

The three films will be released across 2016, 2018 and 2020, will take place around 70 years before Harry starts at Hogwarts, and will follow the exploits of the book’s fictional author Newt Scamander – whose grandson Rolf, incidentally, goes on to marry Potter favourite Luna Lovegood in the timeline beyond the books.

With the novella of Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them having no narrative structure as such (being set out like a textbook of all the various critters of the Potter-verse), expect a totally new story to the one before.

At the same time, we would definitely expect to see some familiar faces. Young(er) Dumbledore, anyone?

The first instalment in the planned trilogy of Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them will be released in 2016. For more of the latest news on all the biggest movies, bag yourself the latest issue of SciFiNow.
